Chess World Cup 2017 Round 5 Game 2 - Tblisi

One decisive game yesterday and two decisive games today leaves just the Svidler – MLV match going to tie breaks.

Aronian held Chucky to a draw and will progress to the semi final where he will meet the winner of the Svidler – MLV tie breaks.

In the other side of the draw, both white players took the full point and the match. So knocked out Fedoseev and Ding knocked out Rapport. That means we have So – Ding for the one semi final.

Before we get to the two decisive games of the day, a quick aside about the newest eruptions in the Canadian shorts gate scandal. As expected the Canadian Chess Federation has written to FIDE about the manner in which their young player was bullied just minutes before his round 3 game. This gave FIDE an opportunity to show their true colours. Fide’s letter to the Canadian federation praises the work of the bully who was part of a team that raised US$14 million for FIDE. So in effect, with the tonality of the letter, FIDE closed ranks around the bully and told the Canadian federation and their player to go f#c! themselves. Canada in their letter to FIDE was making reference to the FIDE ethics committee – as if the ethics committee will do anything to the hand that feeds them. Instead Canada should be preparing their case to be brought before the international Court for Arbitration in Sport against the entire FIDE organization for their defence of a bully.
