GRENKE CHESS CLASSIC 2018 ROUND 2

The Carlsen vs Hou game gives us the chance to address a number of key factors relating to the state of women’s chess within that ethical organization called FIDE.

Hou is the strongest active female player in the world, indeed the only woman rated above 2600 in the April 2018 FIDE rating list of active players. However, she is no longer the World Champion because she refused to degrade herself to the “special” rules for the knock out world championship tournament in Iran. She has the option to challenge Tan Zhongyi to a match for the title as long as Hou puts up the prize fund and FIDE match fee – an amount equal to the total player prize fund. Should she win, her reclaimed title will only be valid till the next FIDE knock out world championship.

Zhongyi won her title in Tehran in February / March 2017. However, neither she nor her 63 competitors received their prize money. I remember reading somewhere that the reason for non-payment was that payments could only be made to players’ husbands – but this last point is unconfirmed.

Carlsen vs Hou 1-0
Bishop’s Opening: The World Champion got into the type of position that allows him to simply grind out the win in a relentless fashion.

Aronian vs Naiditsch 1-0
Kings Indian: The Armenian GM pressed relentlessly to seal his first win in 12 games.

Vachier-Lagrave vs Anand 1-0
Sicilian Timanov: Black’s position got very cramped and unpleasant. Would Anand find a way to untangle. The final answer was no… During the press conference MVL stated that 11…Rc8 had come as a complete surprise until he remembered that it was one the main lines of his preparation.

Caruana vs Bluebaum ½-½
French Classical System. Neither player was able to leverage anything at all out of the position.

Vitiugov vs Meier 1-0
French Advance Variation. Nikita won in the time scramble just before the move 40 time control. Maybe choosing the French against the guy who wrote the book on the French Defence was not the best choice for today.

Here are the games from the Grenke Classic Round 2:
