Chess World Cup 2017 Round 5 Tie Breaks - Tblisi

There was only the Svidler – MVL match going to tie breaks to decide who would be facing Aronian in the semi finals. On the one side you have MVL who is stronger on paper, while Svidler was the last remaining Russian player in the tournament. Rumour has it that having all Russian players knocked out already in the fifth round would send reverberations via the Kremlin through to the desk of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. How this will impact on the FIDE funding model going forward remains to be seen.

MVL drew white for the first 25 minute rapid game of the tie break. The game was a Giuoco Piano that followed the game where Anand beat So at Leuven this year  for the first 8 moves. Svidler was the first to veer away from that game with 9… a5. But the actual novelty came two moves later when Vachier Lagrave played 11. Bb5. The position wound down to a R/B vs R/N endgame with both players having a single pawn on the h file. White’s bishop could not cover the queening square so the split point was a forgone conclusion.

The second 25 minute rapid game had Svidler on the white side of a Symmetrical English opening. The game followed that of the draw between Diermair and Paravyan in Miscow 2016 until MVL played 11… a6. The game was fairly level till Svidler played 23. Qxd6+ trading off his most active piece while neither Rook had yet joined the game. Rc1+ may have been the better option, at least getting a rook on the open file before trading Queens. The result was Svidler needing to give up the exchange on move 30, and by the time he played 32. Ke1, it was already effectively all over. Vachier Lagrave won and progresses to face Aronian in the semi final.

Chess World Cup 2017 Round 5 Game 2 - Tblisi

One decisive game yesterday and two decisive games today leaves just the Svidler – MLV match going to tie breaks.

Aronian held Chucky to a draw and will progress to the semi final where he will meet the winner of the Svidler – MLV tie breaks.

In the other side of the draw, both white players took the full point and the match. So knocked out Fedoseev and Ding knocked out Rapport. That means we have So – Ding for the one semi final.

Before we get to the two decisive games of the day, a quick aside about the newest eruptions in the Canadian shorts gate scandal. As expected the Canadian Chess Federation has written to FIDE about the manner in which their young player was bullied just minutes before his round 3 game. This gave FIDE an opportunity to show their true colours. Fide’s letter to the Canadian federation praises the work of the bully who was part of a team that raised US$14 million for FIDE. So in effect, with the tonality of the letter, FIDE closed ranks around the bully and told the Canadian federation and their player to go f#c! themselves. Canada in their letter to FIDE was making reference to the FIDE ethics committee – as if the ethics committee will do anything to the hand that feeds them. Instead Canada should be preparing their case to be brought before the international Court for Arbitration in Sport against the entire FIDE organization for their defence of a bully.

Chess World Cup 2017 Round 5 Game 1 - Tblisi

Oh dear, what happened to the Chucky that took out Kramnik and Giri along the way. Instead of having the slug fest that we were all expecting, Chucky got blown away by a very well prepared and motivated Aronian.

It all looked bleak straight out of the opening. As black, if you play your knight to D7 and your rook to c8, then you need a pawn on c5 to at least have some pressure directed at the center. But Chucky’s pawn was still back on c6. So when Aronian played 10. d5, Ivanchuk sunk deep into thought for 42 minutes before half reluctantly reaching out to play c5 and salvage something from his broken position.

From there it was all down hill and all over after only 24 moves.

The other three games ended in draws

Here are the full results of Round 5, game 1.

Chess World Cup 2017 Round 4 Tie Breaks - Tblisi

Four of the 5 tie break matches were decided after the first two tie break games, while the remaining match went to the second pair of rapid games. No blitz this time and still no Armageddon game.

The interesting match up here was MVL against Grischuk – where the lesson that we can learn is there is always scope to improve endgame technique.

The first two rapid games were drawn, with MVL crushing the first 10 minute game. In the second 10 minute game Grischuk won an exchange and got into a won endgame according to Nalimov. However, time pressure can be a beast and Grischuk missed his winning move, allowing MVL to get his pawn to g4, securing the draw and a date with Svidler in the quarter final…

Chess World Cup 2017 Round 4 Game 2 - Tblisi

Before we go any further and talk about any of the other games – game of the day has to belong to Maxim Rodshtein. After losing with white yesterday, he faced an absolute must win with white and duly did just that to save the match and take it to tie breaks. We will have to see if he can tap into the energy of the psychological momentum for the rapid games.

The other notable games were the wins by Aronian and Ding that sealed match victory for both players to take them through to the quarter final where Chucky will be waiting…

And that leaves us with the tension of five matches to be decided on roulette spin of the FIDE tie break system.

Here are the full results of Round 4, game 2.

Xiangzhi Bu 2714 vs Svidler, Peter 2756 (16) 0.5-0.5
Alexander Grischuk 2788 (9) vs Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 2804 (8) 0.5-0.5
Anish Giri 2777 vs Vassily Ivanchuk 2727 0.5-0.5
Levon Aronian 2802 (5) vs Daniil Dubov 2666 1-0
Baadur Jobava 2702 vs Wesley So 2792 (2) 0.5-0.5
Vladimir Fedoseev 2731 vs Maxim Rodshtein 2695 0-1
Evgeniy Najer 2694 vs Richard Rapport 2675 0.5-0.5
Liren Ding 2771 (11) vs Hao Wang 2701 1-0
