In round 5
we had a change of scenery with the tournament moving from Wijk Aan Zee to
Hilversum for a single round before the first rest day.
Round 5 had
three decisive games and all were firsts on some level. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov’s
win against Fabiano Caruana not only allowed him to move into joint first place
alongside Anand and Giri; the win also allowed him to pass Caruana on the live
ratings list and move to number 2. What is extra amazing is that just two years
ago Mamedyarov was number 19 in the world.
Wesley So
picked up his first win of the tournament at the expense of Adhiban.
The other
decisive win was Svidler picking up the point against the hapless Hou Yiffan
who now has one draw and four losses from her first five games. During the
press conference Svidler was asked to give his opinion on the unfolding Carlsen
– Kramnik game. He answered that he is not the world’s greatest authority on
rook endings. When asked who is, his response was: “The two guys playing the
game.”
The pairings
