Could this
be the moment where Mamedyarov threw away his chance to win the Tata Steel
Masters for 2018? Choosing the Petrov and setting up a threefold repetition by
move 12 is not the way to win a tournament unless you have a clear lead of a
full point or more. Even Gawain Jones was confused by his opponent. During the
post-game interview he stated: "I expected him to take some risks to get
an unbalanced position and win the tournament... I don't understand his
mentality at all"
Mamedyarov’s
situation wasn’t helped by both Carlsen and Giri winning their games to pull
ahead.
Tomorrow in
the final round the game to watch will be Mamedyarov vs Carlsen. To have any
chance at the title Mamedyarov has to win, to overtake Carlsen. He then has to
hope that Giri loses with Black against Wei.
