TRADEWISE GIBRALTAR MASTERS 2018 – ROUND 1

In a Swiss format tournament you normally expect the results of the top boards to go the way of seedings. Not so at the Tradewise Gibraltar masters.  For starters , 2350 rated Anita Gara secured a draw against top seep Levon Aronian. The highest rated GM loss in the first round was the number 15 seeded Ivan Cheparinov (2699) who was taken down by Peter Lombaers (2345).

The pairings on the top boards for round 1 were as follows, with tournament points in brackets:
Gara Anita (0) vs Aronian Levon (0)
Vachier-Lagrave Maxime (0) vs Blohberger Felix (0)
Tate Alan (0) vs Nakamura Hikaru (0)
